Ms Tovah has put forth a Writing Challenge for all students and teachers at AIS. For the next 10 weeks, she wants to see if we can all write one story a week. She will post themes outside her classroom and on the AIS Story website.
Below is my story. If you submit one too, please post it on your blog and send us the link!
The Surprise
By: Ms Hannah
The blindfold was starting to make my eyebrows sweat. The loss of one of my most vital senses was also starting to mess with the other four. How far had we driven? When were my two best friends going to stop giggling? I had exhausted all my questions in the guessing game we had created, and decided instead to surrender to the beauty that was a surprise birthday party.
Just as I had let go of control, the car began to slow. I could hear the rustling of small rocks under the car's tires and guessed we were somewhere far from our childhood town. The car was put in park and I felt the cool night's air on my skin as my door was opened for me.
"Take my hand," said a friendly and familiar voice. I reached out for Megan and grinned at the sound of her laughing voice. Dane came up behind me and placed his hands on my shoulders.
"Are you ready?" he asked. I could hear his smile through his question and I shouted, "Let me see, already!"
Just as my eyes caught sight for the first time in the hour long drive, they promptly filled with tears. There in front of me were thirty of my closest friends all wearing bathing suits shouting 'happy birthdays' and 'surprises.' If the foreground wasn't enough to bring a nineteen-year-old to tears, behind this group of friends were five inflatable bounce houses. Adult sized trampolines, water slides, and giant Q-tip wars. It was truly a playground built for grownups.
The night was filled with laughter, energy, and love. No one seemed to take any pictures from our evening because we were too busy enjoying the happiest memory we'd ever experience together and living in the present moment, pretending to be kids again.
This display of friendship is one that I've never forgotten and one that will forever fill me with joy.
